Everything You Should Know About Breast Augmentation Types

Breast implants are a popular option for individuals who want fuller and bigger breasts. It is a procedure that can be done to reconstruct the breasts after a mastectomy or for cosmetic purposes.

Getting to know more about breast augmentation types and your options can help you decide if this is something you are interested in pursuing.

Understanding Your Options

If you are interested in breast augmentation, you have several factors to consider. While the type of implant you want is important, you also have to consider what procedure best suits your situation.

The types of breast augmentation procedures you have to choose from are highlighted here.

Sub-Pectoral or Inframammary Fold

With this procedure, an incision is made in the fold beneath the breast. This provides more control of where the implant is positioned.

Approximately 70% to 80% of all breast augmentations are done using this procedure.

One of the reasons this procedure is so popular is because it does not have a huge impact on the breast’s milk-producing areas. Also, the same incision can be accessed if any complications occur or if other surgeries are required.

This procedure is also a good option for mothers and older patients because pregnancy and age allow for a natural sag in the breast tissue. This allows the incision to be hidden for most women.

Trans-Axillary

With this procedure, the incision is made in the axilla or armpit. Once made, the implant can be inserted below or above the muscle.

Some surgeons use an endoscope to help ensure the proper placement of the implant. Only about 10% of breast augmentations procedures use this method.

Peri-Areolar

If the peri-areolar method is used, an incision is made around the nipple-areolar complex. The scar usually blends in with the outer edge of the areola.

Because this incision is close to the milk-producing areas of your breast, women who choose this procedure usually have more issues with breastfeeding and sensation in the nipple.

Usually, this option is only used for women who have extremely small breasts.

TUBA – Trans Umbilical Breast Augmentation

A newer option for breast augmentation is to go through the belly button. For this, an endoscope is used to tunnel through this incision to the pocket beneath the breast.

The implant is then inserted through the tunnel and then inflated with saline. This type of implant is only possible for subglandular saline implants.

Understanding Breast Augmentation Types

Getting to know the options for breast augmentation types will help you find the one that best suits your needs and situation. Being informed is an important step if you are planning to invest in breast augmentation surgery.

It is also imperative to find a quality surgeon who can ensure you get the desired results.
