3 Common Manicure Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Is there anything better than a fresh manicure? It’s amazing what a difference a splash of paint on your fingertips can make in your confidence.

That said, a good manicure takes time. And when you’re in a hurry, it can be tempting to rush through your self-care session. But by taking your time and avoiding some of the most common manicure mistakes, you can give yourself an even more beautiful, long-lasting nail treatment.

Keep reading to learn how to give yourself the perfect manicure!

1. Shaking the Bottle

When you’re using a new nail polish, the paint has an even consistency throughout. But have you ever pulled a bottle of nail polish out of the cabinet that you haven’t used in a while to find that it has split?

When this happens, your first instinct might be to shake the bottle to even it out, but this is a mistake. Shaking the bottle creates air bubbles that will leave you with a bubbly, uneven manicure.

Instead of shaking the bottle, all you have to do is roll it between your hands. This will warm the polish and ensure that it’s mixed properly for use.

2. Using a Sawing Motion With Your Nail File

There are many different nail shapes to choose from when giving yourself a manicure, but they all require filing. Filing your nails is an important step in preparation for manicures as it helps to smooth them out and remove the dead ends. However, filing them incorrectly can cause breakage and feathering.

Never use a back and forth sawing motion when filing your nails. Whether you’re trying to create round or square nails, you should only file in one direction. Start at the side of the nail and file toward the middle, then move to the other side and do the same.

3. Skipping the Base and Top Coats

Walking through the nail art section of the pharmacy, you’re going to find a wide variety of nail tools, serums, and accessories along with the bottles of polish. And while you shouldn’t feel that you need it all to achieve a great manicure, there are two things you need in addition to your polish: a base coat and top coat.

A base coat protects your nails from breakage and chipping, while a top coat will lock in shine and color, as well as add a layer to prevent color chipping.

Improve Your Nail Art by Avoiding These Common Manicure Mistakes

Whether you’re a beginner or have been painting your own nails for years, it’s easy to get distracted or impatient and fall into one of these common manicure mistakes.

For the perfect manicure, it’s essential to take your time and go through each step of the manicure process carefully. Next time you find yourself rushing, remind yourself that self-care isn’t an unnecessary luxury. Taking time for yourself provides a wealth of benefits to your mental, physical, and emotional health.
